Did you know there’s a second verse of the New Year’s song Auld Land Syne? Most people, including us, only know the first verse, but it gets pretty saucy:
And surely ye’ll be your pint-stowp!
Robert Burns
And surely I’ll be mine!
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
So, we don’t speak fluent Scottish, but talking about cups and pints shows that this classic song is nothing more than a pub anthem. Of course, drinking and New Year’s Eve celebrations go hand in hand. But that brings about an interesting season for law firms like ours after the holidays. Alcohol is a lot of fun, but what happens in the aftermath?
Alcohol and the Law
While it’s legal to have a few drinks, there are plenty of places where alcohol and the law intersect. And often, we hear about most of them during the holiday season. As people celebrate maybe a little more than they do at other times of the year, accidents involving alcohol rise. In December of 2021, there were 1099 accidents involving drugs, alcohol, or a combination, according to Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. 917 of these accidents were caused by alcohol alone. Be sure to always follow Florida law when consuming alcohol. It should go without saying, but don’t drink and drive.
Car Accidents
Accidents involving impaired drivers don’t only affect that person. Far too often, these accidents directly impact the lives of innocent people. Even if you don’t drink during the holiday season, you might be in an unfortunate situation when someone nearby decides to drive after drinking. And if that is the case, don’t hesitate to contact a law firm like Glassman and Zissimopulos.
DUI
Not everyone who has had a few too many and drives will get in an accident. However, it’s often just a matter of time. And even if you don’t cause an accident, you don’t get away with anything by drinking and driving. In 2021, over 43,000 Florida drivers were stopped with a blood alcohol level of .08%, which is the legal limit in our state.
Post-Holiday Fall-Out
Now that the holidays are over, it’s time to take stock of the New Year. People make mistakes, and we know that. If you find yourself on the other end of a DUI charge, don’t fight it alone.
