I recently learned that one of the top searches for personal injury lawyers online is, “Are personal injury lawyers sleazy.” And I know what you’re thinking. There has been a long-standing image of Saul Goodman-style lawyers with the big “Better Call Saul” billboards and cheesy TV advertisements. But the truth is, of course, that not all personal injury lawyers are sleazy, and we do a lot of good in our community and for our clients. Here’s what you need to know bout the sleazy history.
How did Sleazy Become the Image?
There is no shortage of sleazy people in the world; they can be a part of any profession. There are sleazy bankers, sleazy football coaches, and sleazy doctors. But for some reason, lawyers became the target of accusations. It may be because most people only have negative experiences with lawyers before they need one for themselves. Or it could be the pervasive nature of lawyer tropes on television.
Better Call Saul and Other Pop-Culture Lawyers
Hero lawyers exist in TV and literature. The ones that come to mind are Perry Mason and Atticus Finch. But bad lawyers make for really good entertainment, so we have always had characters like Jimmy McGill, better known as Saul Goodman from Breaking Bad, and the prequel spin-off Better Call Saul. And not all pop culture lawyers are sleazy; some are simply incompetent, making it difficult to watch a lot of legal TV when wondering how these characters haven’t lost their licenses yet.
Ambulance Chasers and TV Ads
Another place where we see lawyers almost every day is in TV ads. While many lawyers who create advertising are outstanding, some tend to go over the top with their public persona. That’s something exploited in the plot for Better Call Saul as Bob Odenkirk’s character turns to local film students to make a plethora of unethical commercials to spread chaos throughout the Albuquerque legal community.
